CHAMBER GREATS CULMINATION IN ULVERSTON FOR THE DOUGLAS BOYD DECADE
Chamber Greats Thursday 24 March 2011 at 7.30pm at The Coronation Hall, Ulverston
On Thursday 24 March, Douglas Boyd takes up the baton for the last time in Ulverston as Manchester Camerata’s Music Director. After ten years in a role he’s cherished, he will be handing over to Gábor Takács-Nagy who takes over the position later this year.
Boyd is justifiably proud of his time at Camerata – overseeing the transition of the orchestra to one of the most progressive chamber orchestras in the UK, developing an enviable recording programme of the complete Beethoven cycle, and helping Camerata reach out well beyond the confines of it’s traditional Mancunian home, through it’s residencies and digital ambitions. This closing concert of Manchester Camerata’s 2010/11 series at The Coro, is by way of a thank you to Ulverston and it’s audiences, and a celebration of the great music created especially for a chamber ensemble. |
Douglas Boyd is joined for the concert by Camerata’s hugely charismatic Principal Guest Director Gordan Nikolitch who’ll perform Alban Berg’s profoundly moving Violin Concerto, dedicated to the memory of Alma Mahler’s daughter.
Also on the programme – Elgar’s romantic Introduction and Allegro, for solo string quartet and string orchestra; and Tchaikovsky’s luscious and melodic Serenade for Strings.
Watch our latest vodcast with Douglas Boyd talking about how he became a conductor, his time at Manchester Camerata and his hopes for the ensemble under the directorship of Gábor Takács-Nagy. |
At 6.30pm in the pre-concert Talking Point, Gordan Nikolitch talks about the expressive beauty behind the complexity of Berg’s sensational Violin Concerto. This is a FREE event for those holding a concert ticket for the evening performance.
