New for 2011/12 Manchester Camerata unveil UpClose: an intimate and laidback series of chamber concerts in smaller venues around the city, presented in collaboration with artist John Hyatt
John Hyatt
John is a polymath and has a long history of international exhibitions and performances as a painter, designer, musician, printmaker, author and sculptor. As well as continuing a prolific career as an artist and musician, John is currently Director of the research and postgraduate centre, MIRIAD (the Manchester Institute for Research and Innovation in Art and Design), at Manchester Metropolitan University, UK. In 2010/11, John has exhibited in the UK, Australia, China, Japan, and India.
The music world will know John as the lead singer with Leeds’ 80s’ legendary post-punk band, The Three Johns. John has recently produced a new solo album of music, ‘Do What You Wanna Do’, in a limited edition. His new album, ‘Do What You Wanna Do’ is available as a CD from his website.

UpClose: a collaboration between music and art
Manchester Camerata’s new series, UpClose, is a chance to connect with Classical music in a very intimate and laidback environment, mingling with the musicians and unwinding with a drink. These performances also showcase a new collaboration with artist John Hyatt. Experience an eclectic montage of sounds from composers inspired by deeply emotional events in their lives.
In 2011 John Hyatt began making short movies. He is trying to invent a new form of short film for the 21st Century. The YouTube clip below gives an insight into his series of 1-2 minute episodic adventures of The Pilot of Bee Patrol.
John commented: “I have recently been making short movies. This brought up the questions and problems of marrying the visual with appropriate sound and music which have informed my thinking about a collaboration between myself as an artist and Manchester Camerata as an orchestra. What does it mean to present art and music together? How can you avoid one dominating the other? How can they work together to complement and add to each other? How does sound translate into the visual? Where does one sense end and another begin? How can the art and music work together as a total experience for the audience: an integrated event?”
These are important research questions which the collaboration between John and Manchester have highlighted. The inquiry will result in the form of a series of experiments to test possible innovatory relationships between music and art in the form of collaborative events.
