Postcard from Lucerne Competition Winners

Teresa & Ernie Hodges were over the moon when their son Steve phoned up out of the blue to ask them if they fancied a trip to Switzerland.  He’d been the lucky winner of Manchester Camerata’s competition to win a trip to Lucerne, but couldn’t go himself because of other commitments!  So he thought, what better way for his parents to celebrate his father’s 80th birthday?

The city, the lake, the mountains, relaxing in the luxury of the beautiful hotel Schweizerhof, elegant dining in the famous Red Restaurant and last but certainly not least, enjoying the wonderful concert. What wonderful memories you have given us .

We had a very enjoyable flight to Zurich and after a quick transfer to the train station were soon on our way to lake Lucerne. The one hour train journey zipped by as we passed through picturesque countryside dotted with pretty Swiss houses and villas. Nearing Lucerne, we caught glimpses of the sun-sparkling lake through the trees and we were so excited as we had never been to Switzerland before.

Coming out of the busy train station, we immediately saw our hotel across the lake and what a wonderful sight to behold. There was the Schweizerhof in all her 5 star glory – WOW!!! Facing beautiful lake Lucerne and quite near to all the shops and amenities. We were warmly welcomed and made to feel ‘at home’ by the friendly staff. As we were shown to our room, we were hoping it was one facing the lake and our wish was granted. How comfortable and elegant too. A large bowl of fruit and delicious cakes and drinks were set out in our room on a lovely little table facing the lake. We revelled in all this care and luxury.

After a quick shower we were changed and were off to the concert. The concert hall was just across the lake so we leisurely strolled by the lovely banks of the sun-kissed lake Lucerne and admired the views of the snow-capped mountains in the distance. The concert was a joy. The soprano Paola Sanguinetti, tenor Luciano Ganci and bass Luca Gallo were accompanied by Milo Martani on piano an amazing 50 voice choir and fantastic orchestra. The evening was most enjoyable and after a busy day we were happy to sink into our comfy bed and sleep.

Next day ,after a champagne breakfast and a laze outside on the hotel’s veranda watching the world go by ,we were ready for a trip on the lake and to explore the town, which we did on the Dragon boat and the sweet little white train that rattled around the quaint streets and up into the hllls. The rest of the day was spent shopping ,snacking and just enjoying the beauty of Lucerne.

Soon it was time to have our delicious meal in the famous Red Restauraunt – and very elegant and swish it as too. We had red pepper soup, marinated salmon trout, roasted guinea fowl, roasted fish from Lake Lucerne, chocolate mousse, chocolate torte, wine, coffee and chocolate cake. Fit to bustin’ we were, but very contented and happy once again. The service was impeccable and we were made to feel welcome from the start.

Next day, Sunday, was going home day ,so we made as much as time allowed to see more of Lucerne and enjoyed soaking up the Swiss atmosphere. Sadly we said good bye to stunning Hotel Schweizerhof and lovely Lake Lucerne with its breathtaking scenery.

Another pleasant flight back to Manchester and we arrived at home tired but still amazed at the wonderful experience we had had with grateful thanks to Manchester Camerata.”
