Portrait of Doncaster

Posted on November 11, 2011

Children from Kirk Sandall Junior School in Doncaster worked with a Composer, Camerata Musicians and a Visual Artist to create a new piece of music – Portrait of Doncaster – which was inspired by their daily lives.

Taking inspiration from Camerata’s 2011/12 season theme of Portraits and as part of the Portraits of Place learning project, young people from Kirk Sandall Junior School worked with a composer Andy Smith, Camerata musicians Amina Hussain (flute) and Helen Quayle (trumpet) and Visual artist Katy Hayley, to create a portrait of Doncaster in music, photographic collage and live visual image mixing.

The result was a new piece of music and a photographic collage that reflected their their memories and experiences. This focused on what living in Doncaster means to them.

The photographs will stand alongside Portraits from other areas to create a large geographic photographic collage.

The installation will feature as a pre-concert exhibition piece at The Bridgewater Hall, Manchester later in the season.

“It highlighted the power that music has and reminded me why I came into teaching – for those rare and special moments of life.”
