Talking Point, 6.30pm
Beethoven’s specialist Barry Cooper outline the story of how Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony was composed, and shows how Beethoven managed to make the choral finale – an extraordinary innovation in itself – seem a natural and obvious outcome of the three preceding movements.
Post-concert: ENCORE, 9.30pm
This programme presents two contrasting musical forms, taken by Beethoven to new and unrivalled heights within his lifetime. Beethoven’s very first string quartet demonstrates his total mastery of the classical style, as developed by his predecessors Haydn and Mozart. His last symphony, one of the best known works of the Western classical repertoire, is monumental in stature, fusing poetry and music. This concert completes our critically acclaimed symphonic cycle with Douglas Boyd, so don’t miss the final installment.
