Upclose I – “I Have A Dream” With Manchester Literature Festival
Date: Saturday 19th October 2013 19:30
Venue: Manchester Town Hall, Manchester
The third season of our laid-back and relaxed UpClose series begins with a collaboration with Manchester Literature Festival. Together we present a programme marking the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King&s defining I Have a Dream speech, which was delivered in August 1963 to over 250,000 civil rights supporters, calling for an end to racism in the United States. Responding to this era defining speech, poet Lemn Sissayhas been commissioned to create a poetic vision for our times.
Lemn&s poetry will be interspersed with Beethoven&s String Quartet op.130, a work of profound depth and psychological intensity – performed by Camerata’s Principal Players. Written by the acutely deaf and ageing Beethoven in the last years of his life, the four voices of this quartet are an expression of a world of human emotion, at one moment love, at another fear, joy, anger, regret but ultimately eternal hope.
