Mckerras Wins at Classical Brits

Posted on May 15, 2009

In a ceremony dominated by artists from the major record labels, it was Sir Charles Mackerras’s much-lauded recording of Mozart Symphonies Nos 38-41 on independent label Linn that won over the critics at the Classical Brit awards last night. Sir Charles, who accepted the award in person, reiterated his comment to the Royal Albert Hall audience that the disc was his ‘last word’ on these works and that he was in the middle of preparing to record a ‘follow-up’.

Other winners at the ceremony, presented by Myleene Klass, included trumpeter Alison Balsom (female artist of the year), Howard Goodall (composer of the year) and the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards who were awarded album of the year for Spirit of the Glen: Journey recorded in Iraq during a tour of duty. Gustavo Dudamel won male artist of the year while violinist Alina Ibragimova was the winner of the young performer award.
