Review: Camerata success in Workington

The Name’s Camerata – Manchester Camerata!

“Hundreds of people gathered at Workington’s Derwent Park on Saturday evening for the first event of the town’s Urban Classical music festival. About 750 people attended Picnic in the Park, which featured music from the movies, particularly James Bond, and the Last Night of the Proms, performed by Manchester Camerata. Gates opened at 5.30pm for picnics and entertainment and, while some set up picnic tables early, the crowds were slow to get started – the occasional rain shower perhaps putting off some.

While some youngsters had their faces painted and got temporary tattoos, occasionally having wishes “granted” by stilt walkers Mary the Fairy and Pixie Di, many dads could be found converged in the corner of the rugby pitch, where Keswick’s Bond Museum was displaying three vehicles from the films. Compered by CN Group’s David McNeill, the entertainment began with a jazz band and was followed by a James Bond quiz before the camerata took to the stage.

As people continued to eat their food, ranging from burgers from the on-site stall, to smoked salmon bagels and olives, the 55-piece orchestra kicked off with John Barry’s 007 theme.

Bond hits were interspersed with tunes from Schindler’s List, Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, Star Wars and Superman as the musicians worked towards the grand finale of the evening – favourites from Last Night of the Proms and a spectacular fireworks display.”
