Camerata In The Community – Journey To Home

Posted on October 24, 2017

From September to December 2017, our Camerata in the Community team are working alongside Mosscare St. Vincent’s Housing Group to create music and drama with residents from four sheltered housing schemes in Moss Side and West Didsbury.

The residents from each centre are creating songs, narratives and pieces of drama on the subject of their ‘Journey to Home’. Many of the residents have emigrated from abroad and settled in Manchester, while some were born in the area, travelled extensively within their lifetime, but have found their way back one way or another. The songs they have been writing reflect these journeys and are created entirely by the participants within the sessions.

Residents are creating one song per housing scheme on a topic of their choice by discussing their childhoods and memories of the Moss Side area, or other areas that have had a particular impact on their lives. They are also creating a finale song as an ensemble, entitled Home. Each group have written either a verse, chorus or bridge, and Manchester Camerata practitioners have merged these together to create a moving description of what makes a home. You can see a sneak preview of one of the verses in the above picture.

These pieces are to be performed twice by the residents. The first will be at the Albert Hall in Manchester on the 10th December, where they will have a slot post-interval at the Camerata Festive Happening. The second will consist of a longer performance of all songs at a community centre in the Moss Side area on 19th December.
