John Savident to join Camerata in May
Posted on April 26, 2011
We are delighted to announce that the actor, John Savident, best known as butcher Fred Elliot in Coronation Street, will be the narrator for Manchester Camerata’s performances of A Midsummer Night’s Dream on 26, 27 and 28 May.
John Savident has had a long and varied career on both stage and screen. He had roles in a number of award-winning films including A Clockwork Orange, Ghandi and Remains of the Day, as well as appearing on the small screen in series such as Yes, Minister, Jeeves and Wooster, Dr Who and Blakes Seven. It was, however, his long-running portrayal of romantic butcher Fred Elliot in Coronation Street that made him a household name. His character became a firm favourite with viewers and his booming voice and use of the phrase ‘I say…’ became instantly recognisable.
Since leaving the long running soap, John Savident has returned to the stage, taking the lead in a touring production of Hobsons Choice, and performing the role of Sir Joseph Porter in a production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s HMS Pinafore, which also toured the UK.
John Savident will join Manchester Camerata for three performances of Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream on 26 May in Doncaster, 27 May in Stafford and 28 May at The Bridgewater Hall in Manchester. Fusing music and drama, Mendelssohn’s effervescent music is interspersed with narration taken from Shakespeare’s enchanting play. The programme also includes Mendelssohn’s ever popular Violin Concerto, performed by Camerata’s dazzling new leader, Giovanni Guzzo.
