Manchester Mahler up for Sky Arts Award

The Manchester Mahler Festival – which brought together Manchester Camerata, the Hallé and the BBC Philharmonic is shortlisted in the Classical section of the Southbank SkyArts Awards 2011. 

The Manchester Mahler Series   Manchester’s three resident orchestras came together in a unique collaboration to celebrating the composer’s 150th birthday year with a Mahler series running from January to June at The Bridgewater Hall in 2010. 

Manchester Camerata took on Mahler’s best known song cycle, Das Lied von der Erde (Song of the Earth) with the BBC Philharmonic and the Hallé joining forces to perform a complete cycle of the composer’s ten symphonies.

The Southbank Awards are one of the world’s most prizes, celebrating the best of British culture and achievement across visual art, theatre, opera, dance, comedy, classical music, pop, TV drama, literature and film. 2011 will see them arrive on Sky for the first time, hosted once again by Melvyn Bragg.

In the Classical category – the Manchester Mahler is up against The RLPO’s Mahler Edition, and `As with Voices and with Tears’ performed at Portsmouth Cathedral, by Portsmouth Grammar School chamber choir; London Mozart Players and Andrew Cleary, composed by Tansy Davies
