Manchester Opera House plans a step closer
Investing in the North West reports:
“Plans to build a Royal Opera House at Manchester’s Palace Theatre are one step closer after ‘a very positive meeting’ among council and cultural chiefs of Manchester and Salford.
Bosses at the city’s existing arts and performing space, the Lowry, originally opposed the deal, saying it would be bad for business but have since agreed to a ‘complementary’ role.
In discussions with the Arts Council, the plans for the opera house were given ‘clear and distinct artistic identities’ to separate it from the Lowry.
The two cultural spaces “will ensure that audiences in the northwest will enjoy an even richer programme of world class opera, ballet and theatre”, the council said.
Tony Hall, chief executive of the Royal Opera House, said the developments are a “significant step” towards making the royal opera a national resource.
The new theatre is also expected to become home to performances by the Halle Orchestra, the BBC Philharmonic and Manchester Camerata.”
