Seaside Town – Stockport Art Gallery

Seaside Town took place in Autumn 2012 and was a six week project for parents and children aged 0-4 which to explored the different sights and sounds of the gallery exhibition – Seaside Town.

Working with a Dalcroze Eurthythmics specialist and a Camerata musician, early years children and their parents explored music through traditional song, lullabies and movement.  The sessions encouraged parents and small children to use music together, to help in strengthening relationships, as well as assisting in developing language, musical skills and physical co-ordination in very young children.

The project was based upon Ian McKay’s Seaside Town exhibition which ran between 28th July and 21st October 2012, a collection of paintings which combined iconic coastal signage such as ‘Promanade’ and ‘Fish & Chips’ with the colours and textures of a beach environment.

After the project Nikie, mother of Matilda, remarked that she had ‘noticed an increased involvement with (Matilda’s) musical instrument play since the sessions’ whilst whilst Rachel, mother of Fintan & Jasper, remarked that she ‘would love to come again and would recommend to others’.
