St George’s Singers’s Passionate St John

Manchester Camerata is joined on Tuesday 19 March 2011, by The St George’s Singers for a performance of Bach’s St John Passion at The Bridgewater Hall.
| The St George’s Singers were founded in 1956, and from 35 initial singers, it’s grown both in size and in reputation to be able to perform an astonishing range of repertoir.
This joint production with Manchester Camerata of Bach’s glorious St John Passion, is conducted by the Camerata’s Permanent Guest Conductor, Nicholas Kraemer. The concert takes place in Holy Week, continuing the centuries-old tradition that Bach himself upheld, when he wrote the Passion for performance on Good Friday 1723. Also on stage five of the country’s most exciting young soloists, all with impeccable Bach credentials. Tenor Andrew Staples (Evangelist) most recently sang this role with Sir John Eliot Gardiner and the Monteverdi Choir, whilst bass-baritone Matthew Hargreaves (Christus) has previously sung the St John Passion under Nicholas Kraemer in Chicago. The line-up is completed by bass Mark Stone (Pilate), soprano Julia Doyle and mezzo Clare Wilkinson. |
