Striking a Chord in Cumbria

CUMBRIA’S young musicians are being invited to join a new season of ensemble activities.

Events begin with the first Cumbria Youth Orchestra weekend workshop this Saturday and Sunday at Ullswater Community College, Penrith from 10.30am to 4.30pm.

The workshop focus will develop brass, percussion and woodwind players through the exploration of wind orchestra repertoire, aimed at players of grade six and above. String players, of grade five standard and above, will explore string chamber repertoire.

Each activity aims to promote the development of students’ music skills and knowledge as well as building social skills.

The sessions will provide the opportunity to work with professional conductors.

The course this weekend will be led by Timothy Redmond. He is a regular guest conductor with the Manchester Camerata, Northern Sinfonia and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and was appointed principal conductor of the Cambridge Philharmonic in 2006.
