Pre-concert Performance, 6.45pm As part of Chester Festivals Education Partnership, pupils from a local primary school will be performing a newly composed work, inspired by music of Purcell, which they have created with Artist in Residence, Graham Fitkin, and musicians from Manchester Camerata. You will also have the opportunity to hear a further piece they have composed especially for Manchester Camerata in the main evening concert.
Three of the Summer Music Festival composers feature in this concert programme. Handel&s Concerti Grossi are miniature masterpieces and often a world away from his grand choral works in their wit and sparkle. Mendelssohn&s lively and charming precocious String Symphony, written when he was 14, was inspired by a Swiss yodelling song for one of its themes. Graham Fitkin’s Vassal, arranged for full orchestral strings in 1998, requires the strings to play as one, before dividing into many voices. The sumptuous sounds of Elgar provide and elegant contrast.
