MBNA Chester Music Festival: La Passione
Date: Saturday 06th June 2015 20:00
Venue: Chester Cathedral, Chester
We join MBNA Chester Music Festival forthe secondof three performances in the wonderful surroundings of Chester Cathedral. Soloists and conductors from the Royal Northern College of Music will showcase their formidable talents withan outstanding array of music.
The eveningcommences with Haydn’s Symphony No. 49 – known popularly as La Passione (The Passion) – a piece which typifies the composer’s relentless and unrestricted energy from his Sturm und Drang period. This is followed by Mozart’s graceful Piano Concerto No. 23, a composition completed around the time of the premiere of his opera, The Marriage of Figaro.
The penultimate piece is Malcolm Arnold’s Concerto for Flute and Strings, complete with buoyant rhythms and thrilling finale, and the evening climaxes with Schubert’s Symphony No. 5. With its light instrumentation and uncharacteristically small orchestra required, the piece is said to have echoes of Mozart, with whom Schubert was infatuated with at the time of composing. Writing in his diary “O Mozart! immortal Mozart! what countless impressions of a brighter, better life hast thou stamped upon our souls!”, this is a perfect homage to the symphonic customs of the 1780s, and promises to be a perfect climax to the concert.
