Mozart Iii

Date: Saturday 20th April 2013 19:30

Venue: RNCM Concert Hall, Manchester

For the final Mozart concerto programme of the season, Manchester Camerata is joined by the hugely celebrated Hungarian pianist Ferenc Rados in the virtuosic Piano concerto no.15.

This programme is book-ended by two very theatrical works. The Russian composer Alfred Schnittke’s Moz-Art a la Haydn begins in total darkness before launching into a witty and entertaining new-Classical tapestry, a tongue-in-cheek commentary on the music of Mozart and Haydn. Haydn’s innovative Symphony no.45, ‘Farewell’, contains a witty and not-too-subtle hint to his patron, Nicholas Esterhazy, demonstrating in the last movement how the musicians are keen to return home to their wives in Eisenstadt!Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony, an arrangement of his most famour String Quartet no.8, is a dark and intensely compelling work dedicated ‘to the victims of fascism and war’.
