Mention the name Puccini and most people think of opera,La Boh’Ü_—”me, Tosca, Madame ButterflyandTurandot. Yet his musical career began by playing and composing church music. The wonderfulMessa Di Gloriawas his graduation thesis, composed when he was only 22 years old and the first performance was greeted with rapturous acclaim. However, after watching a performance of Verdi’s operaAidahe knew which musical pathway he was destined to follow and theGloriawas only rediscovered and performed again some 70 years later. When you hear this lovely work you may wish that he had found time to write more sacred works.
