The desecration and human destruction caused by two World Wars in the 20th century, was a source of inspiration for a number of composers. Ravel&s rather light-hearted Tombeau de Couperin, written in memory of friends who died fighting in the first World war, is a world away from Strauss& beautifully intense and mournful Metamorphosen, an emotional homage to the destruction of Germany in World War Two. Separating these two is Mozart&s ever-popular Piano Concerto no.21, nicknamed ‘Elvira Madigan&, performed by Kathryn Stott. Encore, 9.30pmPresented in association with Manchester Jazz Festival

Rising star Adam&s playing demonstrates a passion for jazz, blues and other areas of American music, notably two composers whose work was touched by the shadow of war in different ways: Charles Ives, who was drawn into music via his father&s marching bands in the American Civil War, and Conlon Nancarrow, who fought in the Spanish Civil War, both of whom seep through Adam&s angular, inventive style.
