Sollima Plays Sollima

Date: Friday 08th November 2013 19:30

Venue: RNCM Concert Hall, Manchester

This is a concert you really don’t want to miss. Giovanni Sollima is the ‘Jimi Hendrix of the cello’ and he’s here with Manchester Camerata on Friday 8 November. Be there.

Watch the following video of Sollima in action with Manchester Camerata in November 2011.

Following a powerfully mesmerising performance with the orchestra in 2011 (visit the Watch Listen section of our website to see this again), Italian cello sensation Giovanni Sollima – penned the ‘Jimi Hendrix of the cello’ by New York’s Newsday- returns as composer and performer in one of the most highly anticipated programmes of the season. Schumann&s expressive Cello Concerto and Piazzolla&s emotionally rhythmic Libertango are fitting companions for two of Sollima&s own works. The first is a short lyrical piece called Hell I which was part of a project from 2004 Songs from the Divine Comedy based on Dante Alighieri&s epic poem. The second, Folktales, for cello and orchestra, blends contemporary, jazz and traditional, with an improvisatory structure allowing Sollima to demonstrate his incredible cello technique and rockstar energy.

PRE-CONCERT TALK 6.30pm

Composer-in-Residence, Laura Bowler, discusses the composer/performer role from her own perspective as composer, singer and director.
