This concert begins a short time before the end of the astronomical twilight. What better time of day then, as light temporarily gives way to dark, to explore Haydn’s orchestral tenebrism – The Seven Last Words of Our Saviour on the Cross. When this piece was first played in a church in 1785 (or ’86), the room was, according to Haydn, blanketed almost entirely in darkness save for one lamp. We invite you our dear audience to consider what this light might symbolise for you as you listen to this masterful work. Tonight, we want to transport you back to that church in Cadiz where light takes its last stand.
