Upclose I

UpClose is our eclectic series of laid-back concerts in smaller, more intimate venues around the city, shining a light on hidden gems, both in terms of the music and the venues themselves. Relax and unwind with a drink and enjoy a blend of classical and contemporary music at close quaters. Arrive early for contemporary sound-based artworks by John Hyatt and lewis Sykes, taking inspiration from the the music at each event.

Two of Beethoven’s early quartets sit alongside two powerful works by the Argentinian Osvaldo Golijov, a contemporary composer of rare emotional depth and beauty. His Tenebrae is an achingly introspective work woven around some phrases of Couperin, while Yiddishbbuk, taking its inspiration from Kafka, is a work of mixed emotions, in turn wild, eerie, otherworldly, aggressive, tender and lyrical.You&ll also hear Leader Giovanni Guzzo playing the 1709 Stradivarius, which is on extended loan to Manchester Camerata by arts benefactor Jonathan Moulds.Plus, visual artists John Hyatt and Lewis Sykes have a very special audiovisual performance up their sleeves for the start of the concert entitled Beethoven Reconfigured.
